Since the issuance of the ministerial decree establishing Al-Muthanna University in 2007, which became the successor to the colleges of Al-Muthanna previously affiliated with Al-Qadisiyah University, and with the directive of the university administration to open new specializations in the fields of science and engineering, the Department of Mathematics and Computer Applications was established at the beginning of the academic year 2009-2008. The first batch of new students, consisting of 37 students, was admitted. The number of faculty members reached 5, including holders of doctoral and master’s degrees.
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Applications provides its services to various departments of the university, offering computer and mathematics courses as university and college requirements for both science and education colleges. The curriculum of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Applications, endorsed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, considers the needs of mathematics students in various pure and applied mathematical fields, statistics, and computer science, aiming to graduate distinguished and competent individuals capable of competing in the job market.
Among its future projects, the Department of Mathematics and Computer Applications aims, Allah willing, to establish a College of Mathematics and Computers to study various specializations in mathematics and computers, attract distinguished teaching staff with experience, and sponsor others for master’s and doctoral degrees.
It also plans to establish new laboratories for teaching applied mathematics and statistics related to computer education, conducting practical research and graduation projects, and expanding student enrollment. Future plans include continuously updating and developing the curriculum to meet the needs of the Iraqi and Arab society for scientific and technological advancement, enhancing the level of graduates, focusing on scientific research, and engaging with Iraqi and international universities to benefit the department by learning from others’ experiences, organizing conferences, and scientific workshops.
